Our traditional Taita baskets are woven by women living in south-eastern Kenya, providing environmentally sustainable income to families living in a vulnerable ecosystem.
Hadithi Crafts is an umbrella organization representing 49 groups of female weavers, financially empowering a total of 1,450 women. By nourishing their skills, building capacities, improving sales, business skills, and further education, Hadithi provides an alternative to both unreliable vocations of sustenance farming in the arid climate, or game poaching the local species of elephant, giraffe, and zebra.
Taita basket patterns are passed from mother to daughter and income often flows directly towards educating children, health and nutrition, and creating opportunities for her family. The Tirzah Bazaar partners with Hadithi to encourage to the proliferation of this beautiful handicraft and to support networks of entrepreneurs.
Each basket is woven by a woman in her own personal pattern and style. No basket is identical, but they remain in the same color families and all the patterns are lovely. We offer baskets in small, medium, or large. A pattern will be selected when you place your order in your requested size. Each basket has a tag with the makers name inscribed.
